Special Services Program - Student Access

STUDENT ACCESS TO SERVICES

There are several ways a student may qualify for support through the Special Services Program at Longview Christian School. While the program primarily serves students with diagnosed learning differences such as dyslexia and dysgraphia, we also provide support for students with dyscalculia, ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), and other documented conditions—when such support is feasible within the scope of our resources. Parents may bring a report from a public school or a private agency that contains a diagnosis of a learning disability or a neurological condition that qualifies the student for services. The main paths to qualification are explained below:

  • Parents may submit an existing IEP or a 504 Plan from a public school or other recognized agency. We cannot guarantee to include all listed items and accommodations in our plan, but we will review it to inform the development of our own Individualized Learning Plan for the student. We highly recommend that parents seek a formal diagnosis and accompanying IEP or 504 Plan from a state-recognized agency as described under “Assessment” above. These formal documents not only allow a student to qualify for services not provided by Longview Christian School, but also potentially qualify the student for additional funding through Texas Education Savings Accounts and/or the Texas Workforce Commission. These plans are typically reviewed every three years by the agency.
  • Parents who suspect their child may have a learning difference or other educational challenge are encouraged to share their concerns—either verbally or in writing—with the Principal or Program Coordinator. Based on the nature of the concern, the Program Coordinator may conduct a preliminary assessment and/or refer the family to an external agency for a comprehensive evaluation. Please note – a preliminary assessment is not an evaluation by a diagnostician.
  • Teachers who observe signs of academic struggle may refer the student to the Program Coordinator or initiate a discussion with the parents. The Program Coordinator will then work with the parents to decide the next step, which may include a screening at LCS to determine eligibility for special services and, if warranted, a recommendation for further evaluation through an external agency.
